Depression in older adults can be managed

depression, older adults, health problems, financial difficulties, Hartford HealthCare, senior services, mental health

BERLIN - Older adults today are blessed with a life expectancy that is longer than ever before. However because of this, adults are also being faced with stressors which are specific to this longevity. These can include chronic health issues, loss of a significant other, longer retirement, financial stressors, and in some cases, decreased independence and depression.

A free program, sponsored by Hartford HealthCare Senior Services, will address this topic on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1 to 2 p.m., at Berlin Senior Center, 33 Colonial Drive. Facilitator Valerie Walton will focus on warning signs signally depression and helpful behaviors and skills that can help manage feelings of sadness as well as address how society’s perception - including the “stigma” of being older - could affect this process.

Space is limited. To RSVP, call 860.828.7006.
