Ellington Man, Wethersfield Woman Charged After Scuffle With Southington Cops

The incident took place Tuesday night, police said.

SOUTHINGTON, CT - A traffic stop and an ensuing scuffle with Southington officers on Tuesday led to several criminal charges against an Ellington man and Wethersfield woman, police said.

On Tuesday at 11:10 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on Main Street, police said.

Police identified the operator of the vehicle as Emani Edwards, 19, of Wethersfield.

The passenger was Brian Brown, 26, of Ellington, police said.

According to a news release, during the course of the stop, Brown gave officers a false name and birth date.

While being patted down, officers found a drug syringe on his person, according to a news release.

As Brown was being detained by officers, Edwards exited the vehicle, ignored orders to stay in the vehicle and began to approach an officer who was taking Brown into custody, Edwards physically resisted arrest and she had to be physically restrained to prevent her from interfering, according to a news release.

As Edwards was being taken into custody, an open pocketknife was found on the ground next to her, according to a news release. Edwards told Officers the knife fell out of her pocket, according to a news release.

No injuries were reported.

While in custody, Brown gave Officers his correct name and birth date and a records check revealed five active failure to appear warrants for Brown, according to a news release.

Brown was charged with interfering with an officer, criminal impersonation and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a news release. He was held overnight on a $5,000 bond and was to appear ais scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court today, according to a news release.

Edwards was charged with interfering, failure to renew registration, failure to carry insurance ID cards, possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana, carrying a dangerous weapon and weapons in a Motor Vehicle, according to a news release.

She was held on a $5,000 bond and was also to appear in court today. I

In addition, five FTA warrants issued by several Connecticut courts were served on Brown. Bonds on the warrants totaled $64,000, according to a news release.
