Fake Prescription Scheme in Southington Leads to Charges

The scheme took place last spring, police said.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A man accused of pickup high-powered prescriptions illegally is due in court on Sept. 25 to answer four criminal charges, police said.

On Sept. 15, at 5:02 p.m., Rafael Hernandez, 54 of Hartford, was taken into custody in Newington on an active arrest warrant, police said.

Hernandez was transported to the Southington Police Department, where he was processed and charged with two counts of second-degree forgery and two counts of obtaining drugs illegally, police said.

Hernandez was released on $5,000 bond, police said.

The warrant stems from an investigation into a fraudulent prescription passed at the Walgreen’s Pharmacy located at 359 Main St., in May, police said.

The incident was reported in May.

The warrant alleges that on March 29, Hernandez presented two fraudulent prescriptions — one for Oxycodone and another for Ativan — and they were filled at the pharmacy.

Police said the fraudulent prescriptions were discovered when Walgreens staffers checked in-house records after Hernandez was arrested in Wethersfield for allegedly passing fraudulent prescriptions at a Walgreens.

During the investigation, contact was made with the physician whose name appeared on the prescription and it was confirmed that the prescriptions in question were not written for Hernandez, police said.
