Foundation Awards Scholarships To 18 Southington Students

They received nearly $27,000 in scholarships through the Main Street Community Foundation.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Eighteen Southington students have been awarded nearly $27,000 in scholarships through the Main Street Community Foundation to help further their education and career goals.

The foundation awarded a total of $26,920 to Southington students through a variety of donor-supported scholarship funds.

The awards were among more than $423,000 in scholarships presented during the foundation's annual Scholarship Reception on June 23 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Bristol.

This year's Southington scholarship recipients include:

  • Dave Mongillo Memorial/Golf Scholarship Fund: Jake Rivera
  • Dr. Joan T. Wallace Prize for Highest Achievement in English at Southington High School Fund: Ethan Hoffman
  • Elizabeth I. and Louis J. Matt Medical Scholarship Fund: Lilli Doran, Sarah Meade and Madalyne Landry
  • Jeffrey Downes Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Trades: Garrett Thompson
  • KAWFY Memorial Scholarship Fund: Gregory Dunne, Christopher Bray, Maya Kasica, Sarah Meade, Mitchell Magyar and Valentina Lam
  • Kristen Warner Scholarship Fund: Mitchell Magyar
  • Olivia Fusco Memorial Art Scholarship Fund: Aspasia Nguyen
  • Reverend Dr. Eddie C. Whitehead of Bristol CT–Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund: Matthew Murdy and Jake Rivera
  • Richard A. DellaVecchia Scholarship Fund: Ashley Meade and Joseph DiPace
  • Rit Croce Academic and Vocational Scholarship Fund: Garrett Thompson
  • Robert E. & Angeline P. McCormack Scholarship Fund: Madalyne Landry
  • Southington Observer/Step Saver Scholarship Fund: Maya Kasica
  • Thérèse MacCallum "Great Kid" Scholarship Fund: Camilla Garcia and Rosco Cook

In addition, one Southington student received assistance through the Keating-Monaghan Memorial Scholarship Fund, which supports elementary and middle school students attending or planning to attend St. Joseph School in Bristol.

The Southington recipients were among 186 students from across the Main Street Community Foundation's service area who received scholarships this year.

The awards support students at various stages of their education, including graduating high school seniors, current college students, adults returning to school, and those pursuing career training in fields such as healthcare, education, engineering, journalism, the skilled trades, and the arts.

The foundation administers more than 100 named scholarship funds established by local individuals, families, businesses, and organizations.

Scholarship recipients are selected through a competitive blind review process conducted by an all-volunteer committee appointed by the foundation's Board of Directors.

Founded in 1995, the Main Street Community Foundation serves Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott. The organization says it has awarded more than $35 million in grants and scholarships since its inception.
