SOUTHINGTON, CT — A recently approved ordinance regarding handicap parking space violations in town will soon take effect, with scofflaw fines now able to be collected by the town.

The Southington Town Council unanimously approved the handicap parking ordinance April 10, with the ordinance taking effect 20 days after the legal notice was published.

Speaking at the April 10 public hearing on the ordinance, Southington Town Attorney Louis Martocchio said prior town parking rules didn't include any stipulations regarding those who park in handicap spaces without the proper permits.

As a result, when the town's police force issues a ticket for such, the matter is refered to the state court system and fines cannot be collected locally.

With a town ordinance on the books, however, the Town of Southington can keep any fines collected by handicap parking scofflaws, Martocchio said at the hearing.
