Hunger Problem Topic Of Southington Forum

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A local social services agency dedicated to combatting food insecurity is hosting a special forum Thursday evening on that topic in Southington.

Southington-based "Bread For Life," 31 Vermont Ave., Southington, will conduct the talk from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at its headquarters there.

The guest speaker will be Jason Jakubowski, who is the president and chief executive officer of Connecticut Foodshare, a statewide food bank that aids municipalities and cities in combating the problem.

He is expected to discuss food insecurity issues in Connecticut and will include statistics about the problem, trends and the many barriers those who are food insecure face.

Event organizers recommend folks read the book "Free Lunch" by Rex Ogle, which addresses food insecurity and poverty in the U.S.

A Community Foundation of Greater New Britain grant has placed several copies of this book for the public to borrow at the Southington Public Library.

This event comes as "Bread for Life" is already selling tickets for a special "Soup Night" dinner fundraiser to combat local food insecurity on Oct. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Southington High School.

Thursday's program is free, but registration is required and that can be done by visiting southingtonbreadforlife.org or calling 860-276-8389. There is also a QR code that can be scanned in to do this as well.
