Large Halloween Celebration Planned At Southington Museum

The Barnes Museum's 'Trunk-or-Treat' event on Saturday will go on rain or shine.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The weather forecast may not be favorable for Saturday, Oct. 21, but the Barnes Museum's "Trunk-Or-Treat" event will go off nonetheless.

If the weather is perfect, the evening of trick-or-treating and a nighttime "scary" movie promises to be the quintessential family Halloween experience.

But, according to the museum Wednesday, the trick-or-treating will go on rain or shine and, instead of other activities, indoor Halloween fun will be had at the museum's carriage house/barn.

Families will just need an umbrella to hold while in costume.

"As of now, we're NOT canceling the event. Our Halloween festivities are on, and we're watching the weather closely. In case of rain, we've got you covered (literally) with indoor activities in the carriage house/barn. Plan accordingly, and remember to bring your umbrellas just in case," wrote the museum.

The trick-or-treating will be from 4 to 8 p.m. in the museum's recently rebuilt parking lot.

With "Trunk-Or-Treat," volunteer guests bring candy and decorate their vehicle trunks as costumed youngsters go from vehicle to vehicle filling up their bags.

Volunteers are still being sought and candy-givers can register at the museum's website.

While that goes on, the museum will host all sorts of Halloween-theme crafts and games, etc.

When the trick-or-treating ends, guests can then enjoy an outdoor showing of the fun 1950s classic "The Creature from the Black Lagoon," with its cheesy, dated special effects and less-than-Oscar-worthy acting.

Anyone with questions and concerns can call the museum at 860-628-5426.
