Last Of Southington's Independent Pharmacies Closes Its Doors

A legendary business in Southington closed Wednesday.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A pillar of the Southington business community for several decades has closed.

After more than 60 years in business, Serafino Pharmacy on North Main Street shut its doors Wednesday. It was the last of the independent pharmacies in Southington and famous for the black Labrador retrievers who were poised behind the counter to greet customers.

In a social media post, the family said Wednesday was, "a day that we've talked about for years, but it always seemed like a myth ..."

After serving in the army during World War II, Paul Serafino graduated from Idaho State University with a degree in pharmacy. He returned to Southington to open the pharmacy in 1956. Serafino's featured a traditional soda fountain. The milkshakes and root beer floats were legendary in local social circles.

Serafino's quickly became a family affair lasting six decades and an outpouring of well wishes was quickly bestowed on current owner Ron Sefarino Wednesday and Thursday. The family declared Ron is now officially retired.

"I will miss you greatly," one customer wrote. "You are not only a great friend, but also a dedicated, smart, and honest professional. You have cared for our family and friends for many years, in emergencies as well as regular services. Thank you, thank you. I wish you joy as you find yourself in a new path of life."

Another wrote, "Thank you Ron for the years of service, friendship and conversation."

And another wrote, "Sure gonna miss you and that hometown service."

Serafino's is directing customers to the Walgreens at 359 Main St. for services.
