Man Accused Of Reaching Into Car To Steal Checks In Southington

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A construction worker is accused of reaching into a car and stealing stuff while a man was inside a Southington store, police said.

At 7:58 Wednesday morning, Southington police responded to the Cumberland Farms, 1978 West St.,
fior a reported vehicle burglary.

A patron of Cumberland Farms left the window to his vehicle down when he went inside to make a purchase and when he returned his cell phone and check book ledger were missing, according to a report.

A witness was able to identify several men that were parked next to the victim’s vehicle as workers from a
nearby construction site, police said. A search of their vehicle recovered the victim’s cell phone, according to a report.

Surveillance video at Cumberland Farms showed someone later identified as James Marquis Kitchens, 34,
of New Haven, enter the victim’s vehicle to take the phone and check book ledger, according to a report.

The checkbook ledger was also recovered as well.

Kitchens admitted that he did steal the items.

Kitchens was charged with third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny, police said.
