Massive Southington Road/Sidewalk Project Assigned Contractor

Work on the Plantsville Center neighborhood's roads and sidewalks should be completed next year.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The massive redesign and renovation of Plantsville Center's pedestrian and motorist infrastructure has been assigned a contractor and state funding has been approved.

The Southington Town Council last month unanimously voted to hire Paramount Construction out of Newington to oversee work on the $4.3 million project.

According to Southington Town Manager Mark J. Sciota, the State of Connecticut approved funding for the project, which is still being administered by the town.

In total, Southington is getting $4,291,800 from the state, which also includes contingency funding should the project go over budget.

Sciota told the council that the state is paying for 100 percent of that amount.

The project entails a massive redesign of the roadways (area of Route 10 and West Main Street intersection) and will feature concrete pavement, drainage work, concrete sidewalks, decorative crosswalks, benches, light poles, trash receptacles and traffic light modifications.

The hope is for improved motorist and pedestrian safety in that part of town.

Sciota said he was pleased with the state Department of Transportation, which is footing the bill for the project.

"I'm happy to say and I thank the state of Connecticut Department of Transportation for getting it to us and matching our bidding," Sciota said at the June 26 council meeting.

"I thank the Department of Transportation for all their hard work. It did take a long time, but I know it will be worth it."

The vote to hire the contractor was approved 5-0 with no discussion. Councilman William Dziedzic recused himself from the vote.

Work is expected to start this year and be finished by the summer of 2024.
