SOUTHINGTON, CT — Mount Southington will not be opening this weekend as originally hoped.

Mountain general manager Jay Dougherty said Mother Nature has simply been way too moody for the Dec. 11 target to be met.

"Not sure how Dec. 11 became gospel but somehow it go out to the public," Dougherty told Patch. "We'll be able to make snow tonight and tomorrow night, but then we're fighting warm weather again."

"We'll open when conditions allow us to open," he said.

One positive result from this week at Mt. Southington was the new version of the Avalanche double chairlift passing all tests, Dougherty said. The new version of the lift will be ready to go when the mountain opens.

The only Connecticut snow sports area currently open is Mohawk Mountain in Cornwall.
