WOLCOTT, CT — A dog pound that took in a "young momma" dog who appears to have been abandoned without her puppies while nursing is now searching for her owner.

A passerby found the dog running up Spindle Hill by the intersection of Mad River Road Tuesday night, the Wolcott Dog Pound wrote in a Facebook post.

They "stopped and held her so she would not have gotten hit," according to the pound.

"I would really like to say I understand...but I don't ... I like to say she isn't dumped...but I know better," the pound wrote in the post. "I'd like to say it is a mistake...but it isn't. I'd like to ask where her babies are...but I already know the answer. I'd like to ask why...but I've already heard all the excuses in the book."
