PLAINVILLE - For more than 50 years, PARC has provided family centered services for people with developmental disabilities in Plainville and surrounding towns. Now members, staff, volunteers and supporters are preparing for its largest fundraiser of the year: the 16th Annual Helen Coughlin Memorial Walkathon set for Saturday, Oct. 1 at Norton Park.
Alicia Rostkowski, a PARC member for 16 years, said she enjoys participating in the annual fundraiser because “"I like to walk and I enjoy it so much and it is so much fun and I love to chat with friends." She is one of many regulars who join in many of the social activities and events offered such as bowling, out trips and the annual dinner dance for which she is always dressed in fine style. "I have liked PARC a lot and I enjoy it and it is so much fun to chill out and have lots of fun," Rostkowski said.
This year’s walkathon will begin with registration at 9 a.m. followed by opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and then the walk. Several well-known personalities and mascots have been invited and a DJ will provide music. “Our annual walk is a favorite event of many, providing the opportunity for families, students and people of all ages to learn more, get involved and support PARC, which serves so many across the community,” said Erica Donovan, PARC executive director. “Come join us for a great morning of camaraderie.”

David Romine, 35, of Plainville, joined PARC 32 years ago at the age of 3 when he began attending Camp Trumbull, the non-profit’s summer program. He is a big fan of PARC and enjoys hanging out with his friends, Tech Night and strumming the guitar. Romine is a familiar walk participant, wearing his headset to listen to music while he traverses the one-mile track. “I like the hot dogs, DJ and listening to the radio,” he said.
Several years ago, a chili cook-off was added to the walkathon and people have enjoyed not only cooking but sampling and judging the choices. The chili cook-off is limited to 12 people and a spot must be reserved in advance by calling (860) 747-0316. There is a $10 fee to participate and the winner will receive a certificate and bragging rights.

Tim Fernald, of Farmington, said he has enjoyed being a member of PARC for the past 16 years because he likes the social life and hanging out with friends and staff. The annual bowlathon and walkathon are great opportunities to have a good time with his buddies, he said.
Many businesses and supporters have already gotten involved including Saint’s, which as in the past, will donate and serve hot dogs with the fixings to be sold to benefit PARC. Many local businesses – including Rogers Orchards, McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts and others - have continually supported the event through the years and have already committed to the 2016 walk as well, said Frank Robinson Sr., PARC board members.
Sponsorships are still available and volunteers are welcome. Non-perishable food will be collected for Plainville Community Food Pantry and for each item, a ticket will be given for a chance on winning a gift basket. Hundreds of pounds of food have been donated over past years for local neighbors in need.
Registration is $25 per person or $15 for those who are 18 years old or younger. For more information about the upcoming walkathon and how to get involved, visit the website parcdisabilitiesct.org, on Facebook or call (860) 747-0316. #walkwithPARC
