Pilot ID'd In Fatal Plainville Plane Crash: PD

A plane crashed near the town's small airstrip.

PLAINVILLE, CT — One person is dead after a plane crashed in Plainville at Robertson Field, according to multiple media reports.

The crash was reported to Plainville Police at 10:24 a.m. at the town landfill just southwest of the airport, police said at a press conference. The pilot died at impact. His identity won't be released until next of kin are notified.

Police have identified the pilot as Donald Eckberg, 67, of Burlington, according to the Hartford Courant.

The plane that crashed was a twin-engine Rutan Defiant, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

The FAA released a statement saying that the pilot was the only person aboard the small plane.

The FAA will take over the investigation. The cause of the crash hasn't been determined yet.
