School System Takes A Hit As Southington Council Approves Budget

A cut was made in anticipation of reduced state support.

SOUTHINGTON — The Town Council has passed a $142.7 million budget, a spending plan unchanged from what the the Board of Finance sent it, except for nearly $2 million to buffer a potential drop in state aid, the Record-Journal Reported.

The approval of the 2016-17 fiscal year plan was rendered on Monday.

The Board of Finance unanimously approved a $142.7 million budget last month. In that spending plan the Board of Education’s $92.9 million budget request was reduced by more than $200,000.

The board’s request includes nine new teaching positions, four of which are funded through retirements of people who won’t be replaced.

On Monday, council members voted unanimously voted to cut the education increase by a further $869,000, the amount Gov. Dannel P. Malloy proposed to reduce the town’s education cost sharing funding for the upcoming fiscal year.
