Southington Business Donating Water System for Athletic Field

The field is a "desert," the company owner said.

SIOUTHINGTON, CT — A Southington company has reached out to the Waterbury Police Activity League with a new Irrigation system for a field.

Southington’s Winterberry Irrigation is donating all the materials and labor involved to install a new irrigation system, which the PAL could not afford to invest in when a Waterbury field was initially built in 2014.

“The field is in serious need of irrigation,” says Jamie Gorton, general manager of Winterberry Irrigation. “Because of the severe lack of rain, the field is completely dry and the infield is actually burnt. When Winterberry learned about PAL’s need, it didn’t take long for us and our vendors to come together and recognize what we are giving back to, which is the kids."

He called the PAL "a remarkable organization helping kids reach their full potential."

He added, "Winterberry is honored to share in this effort.”

In addition to Winterberry donating the labor and materials needed, Connecticut Winpump Company, which has a location in Waterbury, and national distributor Rainbird are also donating supplies needed.

“We couldn’t be more grateful to Winterberry Irrigation and its vendors for their extraordinary generosity says Officer Dave Vilardo, PAL’s activity coordinator. “The field, which looks like a desert, is not in playable condition right now. We are a non-profit so to have this kind of support means so much to us.”

The PAL park, which was once a contaminated parcel, also boasts three full size basketball courts, one youth basketball court, and a rubber surface playground for younger children.

A formal presentation is being scheduled for Saturday.
