Southington Community To Remember 9/11 Monday

The town is hosting a special Sept. 11, 2001 ceremony on Monday at Southington's 9/11 Memorial.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The Southington community will come together Monday to remember one of the saddest days in U.S. history.

The Town of Southington will have a special ceremony that day to remember the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 on its 22nd anniversary.

Southington police, fire and town officials will convene with the community at 8:46 a.m. for a "brief patriotic service" at the 9/11 Memorial in the Plantsville section of town at the corner of Summer and Main streets.

On Sept. 11, 2001, four airliners were hijacked by terrorists, with two crashing into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, one crashing into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a third crashing in Pennsylvania en route to the U.S. Capitol.

The attacks killed 3,000, including several hundred police and firefighters.

"The service will reflect on the events that took place on this date in 2001," wrote town officials in an announcement.

The first plane struck the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m. that day.

Members of the fire and police departments, town officials, civic organizations and community residents are invited to attend the service to remember and honor those who lost their lives.

The public is encouraged to arrive for the service at 8:30 a.m. to ensure parking is available.
