Florian said representing the United States brought “an immense amount of pride” and described the Olympic opening ceremonies as “a truly unforgettable experience and better than I ever imagined it to be.”

He credited Southington schools and athletic programs for his development, noting he began as a Division III ski racer before transitioning to skeleton, a head-first sliding sport contested on the same track as bobsled and luge.

“I wouldn’t be where I am without the Southington school system and Southington sports programs,” he said.

Florian also emphasized the role of setbacks in his career. “Failure has taught me more than my big wins,” he said.

Council members praised Florian’s achievements and character.

Councilor Michael DelSanto said, “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you learn.”

Councilor Christopher Palmieri said the town was “incredibly proud,” calling Florian’s Olympic performance inspiring and commending his humility.

Councilor Jennifer Clock said Florian’s journey resonated at a time of division. “It is inspiring to have someone who has worked so hard and risen from failures, and it brought everyone together,” she said.

Florian’s family also spoke briefly, describing the experience as “amazing” and “incredibly humbling.”

The council presented Florian with a citation from the Connecticut General Assembly, a Southington town citation, and a town pin.

Officials formally proclaimed March 9, 2026, as “Austin Florian Day” before posing for a group photo.
