Southington Council OK's Tax Breaks For Hotel Developer

The developer is pitching a four-story, 48,000-square-foot structure near Queen Street.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A proposed multi-millon-dollar hotel development this week received a tax break commitment from the Southington Town Council.

With little to no discussion, the council voted 7-0 with one abstention (Demcorat Valerie DePaulo) to grant KARM Properties a tax abatement schedule for a hotel at 95 John Weichsel Crossing.

It would be located just off Queen Street near Hartford Healthcare near Interstate 84.

According to town officials, the benefits would be for seven years after the project is finished.

Monday, May 22, the Southington Town Council voted in favor of the tax breaks after Southington Enterprise & Economic Development (SEED) Committee recommended them in recent weeks.

The developer, Mahavir Patel, aims to build a four-story hotel and has already received a variance for the project from the Southington Zoning Board of Appeals.

According to Southington Economic Development Coordinator Lou Perillo, Patel aims to invest $10 million to $12 million in the hotel and employ between 12-20 people.

Perillo said the building would be 48,000-square-feet.

"Basically he's looking for this commercial tax abatement for his real property tax," Perillo said.

He said Patel is also looking to provide a parking area as part of his project for the local "rails to trails" area in that area.
