Southington Council Stays Mum on Columbus Statue Opposition

A donated statue is the center of protest at town hall.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Town Council members have opted not to comment on a request that a statue of Christopher Columbus paid for with private donations not be placed outside a municipal building on Oct. 9.

A group called "Southington Women For Progress" presented the council with a letter signed by 120 residents asking the town not to accept a statue of a Columbus and place it outside the Weichsel office building.

The letter cites mistreatment of natives of the lands he discovered.
