Southington FD Earns Large Federal Training Grant

The fire department announced Tuesday it is receiving $140,760 in FEMA funds for enhanced technical training.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The local fire department Tuesday announced it is receiving significant federal funds that will help it save lives and property as they serve Southington.

The Southington Fire Department reported that it has received a 202 Federal Emergency Management Agency "Assistance to Firefighters Grant" (AFG) totalling $140,760.

The funds will help the department better train current and new staff and volunteer members to the latest national firefighting standards.

The program will cover several, more-technical aspects of firefighters, training that is necessary for all professional and volunteer firefighters.

According to the SFD Tuesday, the training will cover such topics as safe driving, preventative maintenance, pump operations, hydraulic calculations as well as water supply and apparatus systems.

"The highly competitive AFG program assists career and volunteer fire departments across the country to both equip and train firefighters in various operational components of fire service delivery and to comply with standards established by the National Fire Protection Association," the SFD wrote in its announcement.

In getting the funding, the department thanks town officials and the local Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C., for aiding in getting the funding.
