SOUTHINGTON, CT — Most of the time, an encounter with a firefighters is on a very, very bad day.

But a recent encounter with a firefighter in Southington for one youngster was a very good one, with the Southington Fire Department citing the situation as proof of a wider mission.

According to the SFD, such seemingly benign encounters with the public are, in reality, evidence of a bigger calling for those who serve.

"Our firefighters view the fire service with a broad brush," wrote the SFD in a social media post. "We work tirelessly to help maintain the fabric of Southington. Taking a moment out of a busy shift to brighten the day of our community is especially important."

While not every wave to the SFD will be greeted with free swag, it is a justifiable act and one that firefighters will tell you they appreciate.
