SOUTHINGTON, CT — The local fire department is hoping folks celebrate the new year by making public service one of their prime new year's resolutions ... and the need there is acute.

The Southington Fire Department is using the new year in its regular push to add members to serve.

"Make your New Year's resolution to become a volunteer firefighter and help your community," wrote the SFD via social media recently.

While helping save property and lives for your fellow residents is a prime motivation for volunteers, the SFD says there are other benefits too.

For example, there are pension benefits; medical insurance; tax abatements; fitness reimbursements and life insurance coverage as well, among other benefits.
