Southington Fire Chief Retires, Interim Takes Over
James Paul retired as Southington's fire chief Saturday, with assistant chief Eric Heath taking over as the department's new interim chief.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The winds of change blew through the Southington Fire Department's leadership team over the weekend, as its chief officially retired and a new one was appointed.
Former Southington Fire Department Chief James Paul officially called it a career, retiring Saturday after more than 29 years in firefighting.
Taking over in the interim is Southington Fire Department Assistant Chief Eric Heath, who was appointed to be interim chief.

According to an SFD Facebook post, Paul began his career in Southington in 1993 as a firefighter/EMT, and worked his way up through the ranks, ultimately becoming chief in April 2021.
Some of Paul’s accomplishments included the award of a SAFER Grant that has allowed for daytime staffing at Station 3, as well as obtaining approvals and funding to build a replacement ladder truck, wrote the department.

"The members of SFD would like to wish Chief Paul a happy and healthy retirement. It has been a pleasure working with you," wrote the SFD on social media.
Heath has served the town since 1999 and he assumed numerous roles within the department.
"His expertise in grant writing and knowledge of fire apparatus and equipment has greatly progressed the safety and operations of SFD," wrote the department. "His commitment of public service to the town is passionate and unwavering."
