Troubled By Taxes? Shocked Over Electric Bills? Southington Can Help

The Town of Southington Community Services Department has programs to aid in tax preparation and coping with high electric rates.

SOUTHINGTON,CT — For those living on a tighter budget, the early part of the year can be a difficult time.

This year, for example, electric rates have gone up as of January and that comes amid the start of tax season, where the already stressful act of filing your taxes comes amid difficult economic times.

The Southington Community Services Department, however, has help available for folks dealing with both of those issues.

• For those suffering from electric bill sticker shock, help may be available and the town's community services department can help qualifying folks tap into "The Customer Relief Plan."

This is a $25 monthly credit on their electric bill for customers who qualify for "financial hardship" status, according to the town.

This is defined as households with incomes at 60 percent of the state median income.

For example, a single individual earning $39,761 would qualify for help, while a family of eight with a gross income of $105,521 would qualify.

• Meanwhile, lower-income folks concerned about filing their taxes may qualify for free tax help.

Basically, households earning less than $60,000 in 2022 may be eligible for the assistance.

All they have to do is contact Southington Community Services for more information, with appointments available for help through April 11.
