Southington Kitchen Retailer Expansion Plan On Hold

Town's planning, engineering and fire departments issued support, but several conditions for 'Kitchen Cabinet Outlet.'

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Plans for a local kitchen outlet to double the amount of its showroom space are on hold following the tabling of the item by the Southington Planning and Zoning Commission.

The applicant, Lewis Realty LLC, was seeking site plan approval from the PZC to increase the amount of showroom space at the "Kitchen Cabinet Outlet" operation on Queen Street from 6,000 square feet to 12,000 square feet.

The PZC, however, entertained a quick motion to table any action on the application June 21. That motion was unanimously approved.

According to the application, which was filed May 25, the expansion is needed "to provide more showroom space for cabinets, for countertops preparation and storage."

No reason for the tabling was discussed by PZC members, but local planning department, engineering department and fire department comments indicated support for the expansion, but support that comes with several conditions that must be addressed.

The planning department issued 14 directives regarding the application, including the planting of several types of trees associated with the expansion.

Meanwhile, the town's engineering department had multiple technical questions associated with the plans that required attention.

Finally, the Southington Fire Department weighed in, indicating support for expansion, but stating that for those plans to come to fruition, an additional fire hydrant would have to be installed.

No timetable has been decided as to when the applicant will come back to the PZC, which next meets July 19 at 7 p.m. at Southington's town hall.
