Southington's Leaf Pickup: What You Need To Know

The Town of Southington will actually start looking for leaf piles by the roadside on Oct. 23, with formal zone pickups starting Oct. 30.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Autumn foliage is majestic, stunning and beautiful when it decorates New England's trees in October.

But when those autumnal decorations gracefully float down to the ground, the romanticism of fall gives way to back-breaking work to get rid of them.

Southington officials Tuesday unveiled some information that will help property owners take those fall treasures and dispose of them by releasing the town's roadside leaf collection schedule.

While the foliage is just now approaching peak color or, at least, near-peak, Southington is preparing for when the colored landscape turns gray.

Starting on Monday, Oct. 23, Southington's public works department will be out and about looking for areas of heavy leaf piles, namely those where some trees dump their leaves early.

A week later, starting on Oct. 30, the town will begin street-by-street collections by collecting leaves by the roadways.

Each week from Oct. 30 through Nov. 20, the town will be attacking specific zones in its meticulous, leaf-collecting process.

Then on Monday, Nov. 27, the first zone attacked by the town will have additional leaves picked up since some of that zone's leaves might not have fallen by the Oct. 30 collection date.

Southington officials said people should only bring leaves to the roadside and not grass, clippings, ornamental grass, dead flowers/plants/shrubs, sticks, brush and rocks.

Anything but leaves could harm the equipment the town uses to suck up the leaves and take them away.

In addition, leaves and bulky waste (including brush, sticks, etc.) can be brought to the town's bulky waste transfer station, 617 Old Turnpike Road, Plantsville.
