SOUTHINGTON, CT — The town's zoning board has approved a plan to purchase two parcels on Burritt Street, a purchase that reportedly would offer buffer space near a town park.

The Southington Planning and Zoning Commission last week voted 7-0 to support a $350,000 town plan to purchase the two parcels, which are located near Panthorn Park.

The parcels are located at 426 Burritt St. and 429 Burritt St. and they would represent a total size of just more than 6 acres.

While the PZC approved the purchase at its Sept. 6 meeting, it only did so under the guise of a required "8-24 referral," a state mandate requiring PZC input into town matters like land deals.

The referral to the PZC was actually made at the Aug. 15 Southington Town Council meeting.

With the referral approved, the purchase now goes before the council for final action in creating a timeline to decide the plan.

The hope is the town will purchase the land before any developers can and, thus, secure some buffer space near Panthorn Park's entrance.

Panthorn Park is located at 485 Burritt St., Plantsville. and is home to several features such as disc golf, two lighted basketball courts, a fishing pond, girls softball fields, a children's playground and passive recreation opportunities, among others.
