Southington Opens Cooling Centers as Heat and Humidity Grip Region

SOUTHINGTON, CT— Southington officials have activated the town’s Extreme Heat Protocol and opened multiple cooling centers to help residents cope with forecasted hot and humid weather.

The protocol took effect at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 11, and is scheduled to remain in place until 6 p.m. Sunday, June 14.

Residents seeking relief from the heat can visit the Southington Public Library, 255 Main St.

The library will serve as a cooling center on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Calendar House, located at 388 Pleasant St., is also available as a cooling center. Hours are Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In addition, the lobby of the Southington Police Department, 69 Lazy Lane, will be open as a temporary cooling location overnight and during periods when the library and Calendar House are closed.

The cooling centers are part of the town’s response to a period of extreme heat and humidity expected to affect the area through the weekend.

Emergency management officials encouraged residents to stay hydrated, limit time spent outdoors, and check on neighbors, family members, and pets during the heat event.
