Southington Police Warn Of Phone/Computer Scam

Police said the callers say they work for a company the victim does business with and then asks for access to their personal bank accounts.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Local police Friday issues a warning about a phone/computer scam many Southington residents are reporting to police.

According to the Southington Police Department, people are being called by individuals saying they work for big companines like Microsoft or Cox Communications. They do not, police said.

The caller then tells the victim an "issue exists with their current service or computer," requesting remote access to the victim's machine, according to police.

Callers then state they "resolved" the issue and then ask victims to access their online bank account to verify "there were no issues or reimbursements received," police said.

The problem, though, is when the victim accesses their bank account, the scammer still has remote access to the computer and can see the residents' bank accounts.

"While finanical loss has been reported, it is unclear if any other personal information has been fraudulently utilized," wrote police in a statement Friday.

Police said they're investigating these incidents and urge residents to never let anyone have access to their personal computer or personal accounts unless "absolutely positive it is legitimate."
