Southington School Chief Gets Contract Extension, Pay Raise

The school board said Steven G. Madancy 'met or exceeded expectations in all standards.'

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The town's top elected school official has been awarded a new, three-year contract extension and a 2.25 percent pay hike.

According to Southington Board of Education Chairperson Colleen W. Clark, Southington Superintendent of Schools Steven G. Madancy Sept. 8 was unanimously extended to serve the town's schools for three more years, a contract that includes a pay hike.

Clark said the three-year deal is retroactive to this past July and runs until June 30, 2025, with an annual salary of $200,510, a 2.25 percent hike from his current pay.

The vote came after an executive session that night to go over Madancy's evaluation, with school officials saying Madancy "met or exceeded expectations in all standards."

Those standards included evaluations on "community and staff relationships; educational programs; business and fiscal management; physical plant management; personnel; educational leadership; management ability and communication skills."

Clark said the evaluation was based on Madancy's past job performance during the 2021-22 school year.

The vote to approve Madancy's new pact came after an executive session in which the board discussed the school chief's performance.

“Under Steve Madancy’s first year of leadership, our district has successfully come through the storm called Covid and made it to the start of a normal school year," Clark said.

"While I know that Steve will deflect credit to his administrators and staff, his calm, personal, and collaborative approach to leadership has made working with him a pleasure and the board looks forward to his continued leadership and partnership with the staff, students and families of the Southington community.”
