Southington Schools Name New Alternative HS Director

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A longtime Southington educator has been named the new director of Karen Smith Academy, the school district's alternative high school program.

Southington Board of Education Chairman Zaya Oshana introduced Michael Drury as the academy's new director during the board's last meeting Aug. 13.

Drury told board members he has worked in Southington for the past 15 years, developing his career as an educator, coach and, now, school leader.

He thanked the board of education and district administration for entrusting him with the position and said he plans to build on the culture already established at Karen Smith Academy.

Drury said he looks forward to helping students “achieve their goals and overcome obstacles that may come forth."

Karen Smith Academy, located at 242 Main St., is part of Southington Public Schools and serves as an alternative educational program for high school students.

The academy, formerly known as the Alta program, was renamed in honor of Karen Smith, a longtime volunteer who mentored students in the program after her retirement.

Students at the academy receive academic instruction along with counseling and other support services.

Those who complete graduation requirements earn a Southington High School diploma.

Drury said his priorities as director will include improving and continuing to build the academy's culture while supporting students as they work toward their educational goals.
