The fire started in a lighting fixture and spread to the gym floor, according to the Southington Community YMCA.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The local YMCA's gymnasium was damaged when a fire torched a lighting fixture there early Monday morning.

According to the Southington Community YMCA, which is located at 29 High St., Southington, a "small fire" was discovered in one of the gym's lights.

The Southington Fire Department said the fire was called in at 5:30 a.m. Monday via a fire alarm at the site, which was followed by reports of a fire in the gymnasium.

Fire officials said several Southington units were on the scene in three minutes and noticed smoke conditions in the gym and fire on the gym floor.

"Crews were able to quickly suppress the flames and contain the smoke in the gymnasium," wrote the SFD in a statement. "Crews then worked to ventilate the smoke and confirm no fire extension beyond the affected area."

There were some temporary operational impacts to the SFD's childcare programs on Monday, as well as impacts to the YMCA's health/wellness areas and locker rooms, though all operations were normal as of late Monday morning.

"Thank you for your patience and a huge thank you to the Southington Fire Department for their help and support this morning," the YMCA wrote.
