SOUTHINGTON, CT — A longtime Southington Police Department officer recently was honored by the local YMCA as one of the top community servants of 2022.

Southington Deputy Police Chief William "Bill" Palmieri was named the Southington Community YMCA's "Person of the Year," an award that was announced late last month and, again, at a formal announcement ceremony Dec. 7.

In February, Palmieri will be officially bestowed the honor at the YMCA's annual meeting.

According to the YMCA, the "Person of the Year" award goes to " a member of the Southington community who, through their actions, makes Southington a better place to live."

Palmieri has been doing just that since he arrived on the Southington police force in 1985, when he became a patrol officer.

Over the decades, Palmieri has moved up the local law enforcement ladder, becoming the deputy chief in 2016.

According to his online biography, Palmieri currently oversees administrative, operations and investigative services at the department.

The department was pleased with the honor and said it was well deserved.

"Deputy Chief Palmieri always puts his community first and volunteers much of his time to organizations throughout the Town of Southington," wrote the SPD via social media. "Thank you for all that you do."
