State Police: Car Crossed I-84 to Initiate Three-Vehicle Crash Thursday

A woman suffered serious injuries in the accident, state police said.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A three-car crash on Thursday was caused by one car crossing Interstate-84 from one side to another and hitting a pickup head-on, state police said. A woman suffered serious injuries as a result, state police said.

The crash occurred at 9:04 a.m. on I-84 westbound near Exit 31, state police said. A 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by Joanna McCarthy, 26, of Waterbury was traveling eastbound in the area just east of Exit 30, according to a state police report.

A 2011 Dodge Ram driven by 51-year-old David Elward of Baxters Corner, NB, and a 2013 Kenworth truck driven by 59-year-old John Knowlton of Southwick, MA, were traveling westbound in the area just prior to Exit 30, according to a state police report.

The Hyundai left the westbound section of the highway, traveled through the grassy median and then hit the Ram pickup head-on, according to a state police report. The Kenworth and the Dodge then collided, according to a state police report.

McCarthy was transported to Hartford Hospital with "serious life-threatening injuries," a state police report indicates. Elward was taken to Hartford Hospital via Ambulance with suspected injuries and no injuries were reported for Knowlton, state police said.

The crash is still being investigated. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is being asked to contact Trooper First Class Corey Sutherland at Troop H in Hartford, 860-534-1000.

The westbound portion of the highway was closed for about five hours, state police said.
