SOUTHINGTON, CT — Summer and "camp" go hand-in-hand and one Southington program takes the concept to new, agricultural levels.

The Lewis Educational Agricultural Farm (LEAF) and the Southington Parks and Recreation Department are seeking registrants for "Intro to Farm Camp."

This one-week program, slated for July 29-Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon, is for children aged 8-11. It costs $200 to participate.

It will take place at LEAF, which is a family-owned farming education site located at 65 Blueberry Lane, Southington.

During this camp experience, participants will be able to enjoy time with and tend to the farming facility's livestock, learn to grow their food, and undertake farm-themed "crafts and adventures."

Agriculture and agricultural education play a prominent role in Southington, with Southington High School home to the Carl M. Small Regional Agriculture Science and Technology Center.

It is the home base of SHS' regional agricultural science program, which serves high school students from 10 area towns, including Southington.

Late last month, the Southington Board of Education was briefed about a massive expansion plan for the program, including the construction of a new barn site on town-owned land on Pleasant Street near DePaolo Middle School.

Such a camp experience will complement offerings at SHS when campers get older.
