SOUTHINGTON, CT — Well, it's official.

The library recently posted footage of the construction company knocking down the final stages of the old library, which was built in 1975.

Of course, Southington has a new library, so while the building will be missed for nostalgia reasons, it won't be missed for functional ones.

The new, $16.9 million building was dedicated on Dec. 7, 2024, giving residents a new 30,000-square-foot library.

It was a project deemed necessary to meet fire and building codes, provide modern services and amenities, and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

As for the old library, it was dedicated on June 21, 1975.

Library officials said Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. was "gracious enough to share a video of the last stages of library demolition."

"The old library building served us well, but it is now time for a new chapter to begin," wrote the library on social media.

Work to knock it down started in January, with the project finally completed last week.
