ZBA OK's 2 Chicken Flocks On Southington Residential Properties

Southington's zoning board of appeals has approved two applications for 'family' chicken flocks in residential zones.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Southington's land-use appeals board has said "yes" to two special exception proposals that will allow folks to raise chickens on their residential properties.

The Southington Zoning Board of Appeals Aug. 1 twice voted unanimously on such proposals, allowing for two different residents living in residential areas to have chickens on their property.

With an easy, unanimous vote, the ZBA approved a special exception for David Gold of 267 Berlin Ave. to have a family flock of chickens on his residentially zone property.

According to approved ZBA stipulations, Gold can have as many as 12 cluckers on his property, with requirements related to where and how large a pen can be on his site.

Meanwhile, Sharon Sherwood told the ZBA she's looking to raise eight chickens (hens) on her property,

"They’ll reside in my backyard. My backyard is completely fenced in, tree line on all the back and both the sides," she told the ZBA, according to meeting minutes.

Sharon Sherwood said she's raising the chickens for their eggs.

"We’ve grown our own foods. All my life I’ve made my own bread, made my own yogurt, made my own personal care products so, I’m really into the self sustaining lifestyle," Sharon Sherwood said. "I’m looking forward to having chickens for fresh eggs and, you know, just to be a little more self sustaining and carry on family traditions."

At the public hearings for both chicken proposals, no one from the public spoke out against either proposal.
