“Piece by Piece” is a striking 6-foot-high by 8-foot-wide collaborative installation inspired by an iconic work of American art. The mural was divided into a grid of 48 individual square panels, each reimagined by a different member of the Artists Collective of Westport. Reveal is at 7PM.
Without knowing the identity of the original artwork, each artist received only a printout of a single 12” x 12” section and a blank panel on which to create their own interpretation using any medium they chose. The result is a vibrant and often surprising mosaic of styles, perspectives, and artistic voices — a playful yet powerful celebration of community, creativity, and collaboration. As the individual pieces come together, the larger image is gradually revealed, reminding viewers that every contribution plays a role in the creation of something greater than itself.
The theme of “American Journeys,” the all-member exhibition presented by the Artists Collective of Westport, was inspired by this year’s national commemoration of America’s 250th birthday. The title reflects the idea that there is no single American journey, but rather a tapestry of countless personal paths, experiences, struggles, and triumphs that together define the American story.
More than 60 members of the Collective contributed work to the exhibition, offering a rich diversity of artistic expression and interpretation. All works are available for purchase and are on view in the Sheffer and South Galleries at the Westport Library.
