American Red Cross urges blood donations at Manchester Road Race

FARMINGTON, Conn (November 8, 2017) — Take a break from Black Friday shopping and give a gift that could help save up to three lives instead. Members of the public are urged to give blood with the American Red Cross at the Manchester Road Race Friday November 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Manchester High School.

Blood donations often decline from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, but the need for blood is constant. Hospital patients don’t always get to choose when the need arises, and the Red Cross depends on the continuing generosity of volunteer donors to maintain a sufficient supply here in Connecticut and nationwide.

As a thank you, all presenting donors at the Manchester Road Race blood drive will receive an event T-shirt. Donors will also be treated to soup and food provided by Highland Park Market.

“Sure, you could stand in line at the electronics store for an hour, hoping for a sweet deal on a new flat screen,” said Kelly Isenor, External Communications Manager for the Connecticut Blood Services Region. “But why not use that same time to roll up a sleeve and ensure a safe holiday for someone in the community?”

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, from a computer or mobile device. To get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site.
