Tournament Returning To South Windsor

The tournament began as a South Windsor High School senior capstone project and has grown into an annual charity event.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — A charity tennis tournament that began as a South Windsor High School senior capstone project is returning this summer with a goal of raising more money for a local animal welfare organization.

The sixth annual South Windsor Charity Open is scheduled for Aug. 7-9 at the Wapping Tennis Courts, next to South Windsor High School. Play is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, according to organizer Esha Malli and the tournament website.

This year’s tournament will benefit the Connecticut Humane Society, with organizers hoping to surpass last year’s fundraising total of $1,500.

The event brings together tennis players from South Windsor and beyond while raising money for charity. According to Malli, the tournament typically draws more than 50 participants from across the state.

“The South Windsor Charity Open originally began as a South Windsor High School senior capstone project and has since grown into an annual community event dedicated to bringing people together through tennis while giving back to a meaningful cause,” Malli said.

Participants are asked to donate a minimum of $15 for singles and $30 for doubles, with all proceeds going to charity, according to the tournament website. Players are also asked to bring their own unopened can of tennis balls.

Organizers said residents can support the event by signing up to play or helping spread the word in the community.

Tournament information, including registration, rules, schedules and event procedures, is available at swtourney.weebly.com.
