I-291 Traffic Pattern Changing Wednesday

Westbound traffic will remain limited to one lane, but the closure will move from the left lane to the right lane.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Drivers heading west across the Bissell Bridge will encounter a new traffic pattern beginning Wednesday.

The right lane of Interstate 291 westbound will close between Exit 2 in South Windsor and Exit 1D in Windsor, according to a Connecticut Department of Transportation advisory.

The current setup has the left lane closed. Although the closure is switching sides, westbound traffic will still be limited to one 11-foot-wide lane across the Connecticut River.

Signs will guide drivers through the revised work zone. CTDOT urged motorists to slow down and said the schedule could change because of weather or other unexpected conditions.

The lane restriction is part of a $16.874 million rehabilitation of the Bissell Bridge. McNamee Construction Corp. received the contract in May.

The project includes paving, safety improvements, reconstruction of bridge joints and repairs to the bridge's upper and lower structures.

As Patch previously reported, the westbound side has been reduced to one lane since June 18. CTDOT has not announced when both westbound lanes will reopen.

The entire bridge rehabilitation project is scheduled to be completed Nov. 12, 2027, though that does not mean the current one-lane restriction will remain in place until then.
