Food Packaging - Don't buy it!

Be wary of health claims on food packaging.

The best approach to long-term health is eating real whole foods.  Eating mainly foods that do not have a package, box or nutrition label, things that you find in the produce section of the grocery store or at the local farm stand or farmer’s market.  When you see an apple on the shelf at the grocery store, it doesn’t need a fancy box with a label saying “HEALTHY FOOD.”  Everyone knows an apple is good for you but they tend to breeze right by it looking for packages that will tell them what to buy and what to eat.  Companies spend millions on designing packaging for their products to make it outshine the apple.

Don’t believe any of the claims on the front of any package – it is much better to understand what is in your food from reading the list of ingredients and the nutrition label.  The packaging on the front of the box is not regulated but the nutrition label and ingredients are.  Manufacturers are able to make health claims about their products that may not necessarily be true.  This is one of the many things I discuss with my clients when coaching them to eat a healthier diet.  It can be so easy to be attracted by the health claims made by food manufacturers and it does take time and effort to understand what is really in our food supply.  Turning to whole unprocessed foods is the best way to ensure you know what you are putting in your body.
