I eat my vegetables alone
Why do so many celebrations this time of year focus on foods that detract from our health?
I was pondering this with a friend today – so many celebrations this time of year focus around food and not just any food, but specifically health detracting foods – many sweets and foods high in saturated fats.
Just yesterday, I received an e-mail about an all-day food fest which is sure to be filled with sugary treats among many other foods that could leave you with an upset stomach the next day and make you feel sluggish and tired. My friend mentioned she is going to a fudge making party at her church. Plus many people have cookie swaps baking more cookies than their entire neighborhood should eat in a month.
I want to throw a Kale-Salad making party – everyone would bring their own recipe for kale salad instead of a cookie swap. I eat my vegetables alone. No on is going to show up for my Kale party – or if they do show up, they will bring their own potato chips, pizza and cookies instead of kale salad.

How can we shift the focus away from all of these foods that detract from our health and instead focus on foods that improve our health and more importantly on the time spent with those we care about this time of year?
There are so many treats and unhealthy foods to tempt us this time of year – for at least some of the parties you attend, think about eating what will make you feel better the next day and boost your energy. What will give you long-term health benefits? Focus on health promoting foods and step away from the cookies.
