The road to college begins even before high school. Tips for success:
1. Start by helping your elementary and middle school children develop a love for learning.
2. Encourage good study habits.
3. Prospective students should be well rounded, encourage your child to engage in extracurricular activities: such as sports, music, art, community service, and social clubs. Give back to their community.
4. Practice tests; enroll them in a PSAT course. Also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT).
5. Help them become a leader. Top colleges look for applicants who are future leaders. Encourage your child to take a leadership role.
6. Once your child has decided which schools to apply for, make sure you keep on top of deadlines. Applying early can increase your student’s chance of acceptance.
7. Talk to your child about living away from home. Teaching them early the value of saving money. This will help make sure he or she knows how to manage money wisely and pay bills on time when they’re on their own.
