Protecting Our Community: Medical Waste Disposal

Improved health care, better diagnosis, medical research and more effective medications, have resulted in an increase in the number of prescriptions being written by physicians. Pharmacies are stocked with over-the counter medications that treat a widespread variety of symptoms. With more medicines in our homes, disposal of unused, unwanted and expired medications has become a serious problem.

It is not unusual for people to place their unwanted medicines in the drain, toilet or garbage. This seemingly innocuous practice can expose the community to unexpected risks. Medicines flushed down the toilet or the drain can end-up in the soil and/or water supply. If pills make their way into the hands of children, there can be dire consequences. Some teenagers are using prescription drugs for non-medical purposes. It is all too common to hear that legitimate prescriptions for the drug Oxycodone have been taken from medicine cabinets and sold illicitly. Because of the environmental implications and potential for personal harm, an easily accessible system for the disposal of unwanted medicine is a prudent step for our community.

While South Windsor does have a medicine disposal program, I believe that it can be enhanced, with minimal effort. A metal, one-way, lock box, located in the police station, would provide a safe way to dispose the unwanted medications. A camera could be installed to monitor the use of the lock-box, 24/7. Anyone who has outdated or unwanted prescriptions or over-the-counter medicines would have an easy option for their disposal.

I have spoken about this proposal with other Town Council members. We will continue to coordinate with our police department and town manager to work toward the implementation of this effort. Together, we can continue to make South Windsor a safe and environmentally friendly community.
