The Spirit of Ramadan
The month of Ramadan that is celebrated by many in the Town of South Windsor help us remember the hunger that is a harsh reality for not only people across the world, but also in our own neighborhood.
During this, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims celebrate Ramadan. It is a month to reflect and reevaluate our lives. Muslims -throughout the world - are asked to practice self-restraint in both mind and body. This includes a fast that begins at dawn and continues until approximately 8:00 pm each day of the month. Fasting is not only physical; it is a total commitment to cleanse the body and soul of impurities and to focus on worship. This practice helps us experience the hunger that so many people endure, everyday.
Despite impressive technological advances, hunger remains a challenge in every nation of the world. According to some estimates, one in seven people lack of sufficient food. In Connecticut, more than 50,000 children live in extreme poverty. Failed economic systems, conflicts, climate and lack of enough fertile land are factors that contribute to hunger. In our town of South Windsor, there are families who are food insecure. Requests for assistance to the South Windsor Food & Fuel Bank have increased over the last few years. No one plans to go hungry or wants to turn to a food bank for sustenance. But, many people are no more than a bad break – or two – from this harsh reality. Just consider how many individuals were suddenly impoverished by the economic downturn, ponzie schemes, high risk mortgages and unexpected illness.
Fasting is practiced by all of the major faiths of the world. It is symbolic of the commitment to the Lord and humanity. In Muslim households, families break their fast in the evening, celebrating the spirit of Ramadan. If you would like to offer assistance to those who need a helping hand, during this season or any other, please consider contacting the South Windsor Food Bank & Fuel Bank.
