Time with friends to boost your health
Time spent with friends and relatives has a benefit to your long term health.
A couple of days ago I got together with a friend I had not seen in years. She was a great friend that I used to work with. When we worked together we used to take walks every day at lunchtime. As we both moved on to other things in our lives, I moved to a new job, she is now a full time mom with a wonderful son and has horses she cares for. We gradually saw less and less of each other until we found several years had passed.
We had diner together (a fantastic dinner that she made) and talked about things that had changed in our lives over the past few years, caught up on details and stories. Shared a lot of laughter. It was such a great experience and felt like there had not been the gap in time; similar to the talks we used to have when we walked together at lunchtime.
It is so important to maintain friendships and relationships in our lives – this boosts our spirits and helps us to get through difficult times, knowing there are people who care for us and are supporting us emotionally on our journey.

If there are people who have been in your lives in the past that you care about and you have lost touch, pick up the phone, send an e-mail, message them on Facebook. However you choose to do it, find a way to stay in touch and cultivate relationships. This is one of the best things you can do for your long-term health. Think back to the last time you spent with a friend or relative sharing stories and laughing – how good did you feel after this experience. Now take that feeling and think about the cumulative effect it has on you over time.
This is one of the many things I suggest to my clients to improve their health; to work on cultivating and maintaining positive relationships in their lives.
