SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent accomplishments of college and university students from South Windsor, as provided by readMedia Newswire.
- WILLIMANTIC, CT — Forty-nine exemplary psychology students from Eastern Connecticut State University presented their research on Dec. 9 at the department's annual Psychological Science Night.
Among the students who presented were two from South Windsor. Taylor Pendergast, who majors in Early Childhood Education and Psychology, presented her research project entitled "An Examination of the Relationship of Social Media Engagement on Depression in Male and Female College Students." Arielle Thomas, who majors in Psychology, presented her research project entitled "The Relationship Between Depression and Anxiety on Sleep Among College Students." - WILLIMANTIC, CT — Eastern Connecticut State University recently hosted its annual Scholarship Reception in the Fine Arts Instructional Center. The event brought together major ECSU Foundation scholarship donors and their respective student-recipients. This year students were awarded scholarships, totaling more than $600,000 in financial aid to students of all backgrounds and academic majors. Scholarship recipients from South Windsor, along with their majors, were Samantha Baranauskas (Communication), Paula Berson (Social Work), Cory Derohanian (Business Administration and Accounting) and Rose Godfrey (Pre-Secondary Education Certification and English).
- WILLIMANTIC, CT — Hanna Madler of Eastern Connecticut State University helped christen the brand new Proscenium Theatre with an inaugural performance of "Cervante's Pedro, The Great Pretender." The historic occasion - the first major production of the Theatre Program to occur in that venue - took place within Eastern's new Fine Arts Instructional Center from Nov. 8 to 13. The classic play by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, a playwright of the Spanish Golden Age, follows the tricks of Pedro, a master pretender whose escapades involve him with a slew of characters and careers as he struggles to find his true vocation in life. Madler majors in Accounting and Theatre with concentrations in Acting and Directing. In "Pedro," Madler played Ines.
- WILLIMANTIC, CT — Several hundred Willimantic residents converged on Eastern Connecticut State University on Nov. 23 for 10th annual Day of Giving. The event provided a hot holiday meal to people who otherwise may not have been able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. Eastern students played a big role in the event, serving food, collecting dishes, escorting guests and cleaning up after the event. Among the volunteers was Christopher Mathis of South Windsor, whose major is Sociology. The Day of Giving was sponsored by Eastern's Center for Community Engagement (CCE) and the ECSU Foundation, Inc., which donated turkeys and provided bus transportation for guests. Food was provided by Chartwells, Eastern's food service contractor, which prepared a full Thanksgiving spread of turkey and side dishes.
- WILLIMANTIC, CT — The Opera Workshop at Eastern Connecticut State University presented "From the Sublime to the Ridiculous," its end-of-semester concert, on Dec. 3 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC) Concert Hall. Andrew Hofmann of South Windsor was one of the students who performed in the concert. Hofmann majors in Music. Featuring scenes from the operettas of Bernstein, Strauss, Gilbert and Sullivan, the Opera Workshop provided a family-friendly afternoon of operatic performance. The Opera Workshop is a course designed to offer students hands-on experience in stage movement, character development and scene study. Students develop these skills while exploring repertoire from opera, operetta and musical theater.
- ITHACA, NY — Ithaca College student Jenna Harner of South Windsor won fourth place in the Best Video Sportscast category at the National Student Electronic Media Convention. The award was presented to the student producers of Ithaca College Television sports show, "Hold That Thought."
- NASHVILLE, TN — Sarah Caye and Jeanette Porcello of South Windsor achieved the Dean's List at Belmont University for the Fall 2016 semester. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.
