SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent notable achievements for college students from South Windsor, as reported by readMedia Newswire.

Assumption College, Worcester MA

  • Assumption College honored 76 students with awards for academic excellence during the 33rd Annual Honors Convocation, held on April 19 in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Awards ranged from departmental honors to special recognitions, to Augustine Scholarships, the College's highest academic honor. Jennifer Futtner of South Windsor, a member of the Class of 2019, received the George E. and Sarah Denomme Scholarship. Emily Rizza of South Windsor, a member of the Class of 2019, received an Augustine Scholarship, which is awarded to rising junior and senior students, who-through their academic achievement, leadership, community service and good character-best embody the Assumption College mission. Victoria Russo of South Windsor, a member of the Class of 2017, received the departmental award for human resources and rehabilitation studies.
  • The Assumption College Department of Modern & Classical Languages & Cultures has announced that Jennifer Futtner, of South Windsor, has been named to the French National Honor Society, Pi Delta Phi. Futtner, Class of 2019, was inducted into the honor society on Wednesday, April 26.

  • Eastern Connecticut State University inducted students majoring in business administration, business information systems and accounting into the Delta Omega chapter of Delta Mu Delta (DMD), the international honor society for Business Administration, on April 18. Among the inductees was Megan O'Brien of South Windsor who majors in Business Administration and Theatre. Each year, Business administration students are honored for academic achievement by membership in DMD. Membership into DMD is an honor that confirms that students have worked hard to achieve excellence throughout their studies. It reveals that they have the knowledge and drive to succeed in a business career. With this membership, students are given the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and professionals.
  • A cohort of high-achieving psychology students from Eastern Connecticut State University was inducted into Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology, on April 24. Among the inductees was Yohan Krumov of South Windsor, who majors in Psychology. Psi Chi's mission is to encourage excellence in scholarship and to foster the advancement of psychological science. Eastern students who are inducted into Psi Chi must declare a major or minor in psychology, have at least 12 credits of coursework in psychology and attain a 3.5 GPA in psychology and a 3.0 GPA overall.
  • The Concert Chorale at Eastern Connecticut State University performed alongside the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra this past April for its annual spring concert in the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC). Among the performers was Andrew Hofmann of South Windsor, who sings in Eastern Concert Chorale. Hofmann majors in Music. The Eastern Concert Chorale is the largest vocal ensemble at Eastern and focuses on choral and orchestral masterworks, as well as shorter choral selections. The ensemble performed a collection of opera overtures, choruses and arias with pieces by Orff, Borodin, Bizet, Puccini, Verdi and other composers.
  • The Third Annual CREATE Conference at Eastern Connecticut State University took place on April 21. CREATE stands for "Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern," and is the University's premier conference showcasing student research and creative activity. The one-day conference featured more than 300 Eastern undergraduates who presented talks, professional posters, live music, dance performances, art and photography exhibits, documentary films and panel discussions.
    Participants from South Windsor were Sarah Brihan, who majors in Elementary Education and History and presented an oral presentation titled "How Do You Bring Down The Wall? With Art" and two poster presentations: "The Way We Wore" and "Implications Of Teacher Appearance And Its Impacts On Student Perceptions"; Joseph Chaisson, who majors in Communication and presented photography; and Megan O'Brien, who majors in Business Administration and Theatre and presented a poster titled "Design For Two Gentlemen Of Verona."
  • Paula Berson, a student at Eastern Connecticut State University, had her poem published in the 2017 edition of the student literary journal "Eastern Exposure." Berson hails from South Windsor and majors in Social Work. "Writing this poem gave me an outlet to share my feelings in regards to the current issues surrounding immigrants," said Berson. "I am not a poet, I have never written poetry before but with the current divide on the issue of immigration I felt compelled to put my feelings on paper. I hope that by sharing my story I am able to start a conversation. As an immigrant and future social worker I know how important it is to speak up for those who may not be able to speak up for themselves."
  • A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students were recently inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society for the field of communication. Samantha Baranauskas and Lisa Lavoie of South Windsor were among the inductees; both major in Communication. The society recognizes students who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, a communication studies GPA of at least 3.25, are in the upper 35 percent of their graduating class, are enrolled in good standing and display a commitment to the field of communication.

Elmira College, Elmira NY

  • Marissa Silverman of South Windsor has been named to the Elmira College Dean's List for the winter 2017 term. Full-time students who achieve a grade point average of 3.600 or higher at the end of any Term I or Term II are placed on the Dean's List at the college.

St. Lawrence University, Canton NY

  • Milena Kozyra of South Windsor has been selected for membership in Gamma Sigma Alpha, the national academic Greek honor society, at St. Lawrence University. Kozyra is a member of the Class of 2018 and is majoring in Economics. Kozyra attended Ethel Walker School. To be a member in Gamma Sigma Alpha, students must be a member of a St. Lawrence fraternity or sorority, be a current junior or senior and have either a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher or have a achieved a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher during their junior or senior year.

Western New England University, Springfield MA

  • Shannon Gendreau of South Windsor has been elected to serve as Senator at Large for the 2017-2018 academic year. Gendreau, majoring in History, was chosen by almost 400 who voted in this year's election which took place on March 23. The undergraduate student government, "Voice of the Students", serves as the official liaison between the Student Association and the University. The Student Senate serves as the legislative and executive branches of student governance and is a recognized forum of student opinion. The goal for this organization is to reach out to undergraduate population and let their comments, concerns, opinions, and voices be heard.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

  • Daniel Bettigole and Adam Bettigole of South Windsor were among 60 WPI spring student-athletes across five sports who achieved NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status.
